As you will know from reading this blog and perhaps my outdoor blog, The Urban Wanderer, Jit and I love the environment and walking. As such, we can end up with some stinky smells in our shoes and hiking boots. I’m not keen on the ones that you can buy from the shops as they are riddled with chemicals and artificial scents, which I am sure are probably just masking the smell.
So I have come up with my own DIY natural shoe deodoriser that is fresh smelling with anti-septic qualities to really fight the smells. I did a good 16 miler in the warm weather yesterday and tested out the spray last night. It worked and the front porch was fresh and lovely this morning too. Natural shoe deodoriser and air freshener in one! BONUS!
And a bonus is that it only uses two ingredients which although might seem quite dear, they can be used for all sorts of other uses too!
Ingredients:
Distilled Witch Hazel
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Equipment:
100 ml Spray Bottle (I bought mine in Boots)
Small funnel
Method:
Fill the bottle to around 95% full with witch hazel, using the funnel to keep everything in place
Drip 40 drops of tea tree essential oil into the bottle
Put the spray top onto the bottle and shake well to combine
Spray into and around the shoes 2-3 times (I do the main opening of the shoe, into the toes and then over the whole shoe. Boots might need one or two more squirts depending on the size)
…and you’re done!
Remember to shake the bottle before each use to make sure that the ingredients are mixed
We have been using the spray for over a week now and it really is working! So often we would nip into the vestibule to be greeted with a great pong of shoes – it’s one of the reasons we keep them out there now! Not really the greatest way to welcome guests into your home either!
With miles per week in our shoes and boots, we really did need something to keep them fresh and approachable and my DIY natural shoe deodoriser is certainly doing the trick!
Here’s to a welcoming sell when you visit!
Do you like walking or going to the gym? How do you keep your shoes and trainers smelling fresh?
