Last week we had #BlackCatDay so I decided that I would celebrate by making some dark chocolate cat biscuits for Jit to take into work.  I also, of course, took some pictures of my gorgeous black boy, Noir!

We adopted Noir after our next-door neighbour did a runner leaving behind a Rottweiler and an Alsatian roaming the streets and a cat and her kitten. Phoebe (as I named the Mum) was rehomed to a Nursing Home where their resident cat had just passed away and we kept Noir because he fitted in with the crew so well.  The dogs were both taken to the Manchester Dogs Home for rehoming there – they were gorgeous and friendly so I’m sure they were homed quickly! Here is my black, curly tailed, boy!

Just in case you don’t know why there is a day called Black Cat Day and Black Cat Appreciation Day, it is because of a lot of superstitious thinking that prevents people from adopting black and black and white cats.  There are less than half as likely to be adopted than their colourful counterparts, not only because of colour, but because of superstitions and also (the most pathetic!) because they don’t look good in selfies!

I didn’t choose any of my cats by colour (they have all been adopted) and the only one that was kind of ‘chosen’ was Annie (black and white) as I was looking for a friend for Willow (black and white) and she arrived as a foster with my friend, so I snapped her up!

Anyway, I think more people should consider black cats and that is why I made the biscuits to help people understand the difficulties that black cats face when in rescue centres.

Anyway, here are some more pictures of Noir!

…and proof that black cat selfies do work!

Back to cookies!  I am SO easily distracted by cats – especially my own!  At least I’m still talking about cats in the form of dark chocolate cat biscuits!

Method:

In a mixing bowl or mixer cream together the margarine and the sugar until light and fluffy

Beat in the egg

Add the cocoa and flour and mix well, kneading to combine

Roll into a ball and wrap in clingfilm

Pop the dough into the fridge for at least an hour to firm up a bit

When ready, preheat the oven to 180 C and lightly grease two baking sheets with some margarine (I rub the block over like it is prit stick)

Roll our the dough on a lightly floured (or cocoa’d) surface and cut into your cats or other shape

Place on the baking sheets with some space between as they will spread a little when baking

Pop them into the oven for 8 minutes

Once baked, leave to cool slightly before lifting them onto a wire rack to cool completely

They are really delicious biscuits that have just the right balance between soft and chewy, so they are kind of like cookies.  I really enjoy them because they have a lightly crumbly texture and the cocoa makes the perfect chocolatey taste without it being too sickly.  I do love cocoa though!

Jit said that they went down really well at work and one of his colleagues even jumped in to help explain about black cats and adoption, so they worked well as an education tool too. Tasty and educational cookies, I think they could be the way forward – at least dark chocolate cat biscuits anyway.

Here they are all tucked up ready for transporting to work! (I did keep a cat and a heart for myself too, don’t you worry!)

I have been making these biscuits for years now and they have been a real hit for many fundraisers including for my art degree show and also for the rescue that was caring for Annie before she came to live with us.  I love that they have time in the fridge as it means that you can run up another batch of something while you’re waiting for them to chill.

And of course, no post on black cat awareness would be complete without another picture of Noir!

Now that I have finished this post (surrounded by cats, I might add!) it is time to do my real role in life and that is to get the wand toy out for some pre-lunch play. I certainly know where I stand and that is right under the paw!

Here’s to our furry kids and black cats all over the world!

The eternal cat lady,

Sarah sig

Did you know that black cats have a hard time finding homes?  Would you make some dark chocolate cat biscuits to help raise awareness?
