If, like me, you love to keep your jeans for as long as possible you will know that you have to deal with the inevitable wear and holes, which is why I have decided to run up a bit of a how to darn jeans video tutorial.

I have been darning my jeans for some time now – mainly because I used to wear a Crumpler bumbag which is made out of the strongest material I have ever known which inevitably left me with holes where it rubbed.  I love doing a bit of hand darning and think it looks a lot prettier than just running it up on the machine – plus it saves getting the sewing machine out anyway.

I mainly get holes in the back pocket of my jeans because I hold my keys there attached to a macrame chain (so that I don’t lose them!) You can find out more about my ‘fashion sense’ in my OOTD posts!) There are also other wear points that develop from where bags rub and from the ‘worn look’ that a lot of jeans seem to come with.

In this tutorial I am going to show you how to darn the hole in a pocket to make it strong and keep it from wearing again so quickly.

You will need:

Some coloured embroidery thread

A medium needle with a large eye

Scissors

Some basic sewing experience

It is the first real video that I have done for Susty’s so be kind! 😉

I hope that you have found this to be helpful!  Would you like to see some more video tutorials on the blog?  Let me know and I’ll see what I can do!

Let’s get making do and mending!

Will you be giving this a try on your worn jeans?

Let me know in the comments below! 🙂

Below are the finished patches.  I have used different colours because I like to make more of a feature out of them than try to disguise them – and because I love, love, love, colourful clothes!

Wow, that looks so cool and darning the holes in different colours definitely adds interest to the jeans and ends up making them more unique too!

Thanks, Natalie. Yeah, I think the different colours make them more cheerfun and individual too – why hide the fact that they are old and worn!

I love this. Darning is becoming a lost art since fashion got so disposable. Using coloured thread is a great way do it creatively.

Thank you, Joanne! It really is a dying art, which is a shame and so sad about how disposable fashion is (even to the point of disposable lives in the factories!) I also still darn our socks!

What a great tutorial! I haven’t heard of this before, but it looks like a fun way to jazz up jeans.

Thanks, Dannii 🙂 To be honest, it is less about jazzing them up and more about keeping them going – the jazzy is just a nice side effect!

I love this!

I normally sit there debating whether to throw them or keep and now it makes sense to keep.

Good tip!

Glad to be of help, Emma! There are so many resources that go into making jeans that we need to get the most out of them! Let me know if you get darning yours, I’d love to see how you get on 🙂 x
