Homity Pie with a good old 80’s style salad

Out in a cafe somewhere we noticed that they were selling Homity Pie. Curious as to what it was (Jit thought it was a brand name) I googled it to find out.  Homity Pie is a kind of quiche-esque pie with potatoes, fried onion and spinach with a creamy filling.  It sounded pretty good to me, so I planned it into the week and gave it a go last night.

It was messier than I had expected while trying to get the cream mixture into the case, but the taste made the mess worth the while.  It is certainly something that I will be adding to my meal plan when the weather gets cooler.  I also reckon you could add other seasonal flavours too – to save it from being just a wintery type meal.

I say wintery type, we had it on a pretty warm day and it was perfect as the salad balanced it out brilliantly.

The base goes into the pie without pre-cooking or blind baking which makes it much easier than a quiche and saves time having to do the bakes before filling.  And to assure you, it does cook throughout too – no soggy bottoms on this pie!

25 g butter

1 tbsp olive oil

3 large onions, halved and sliced

Method

Pastry

Place the two flours and butter into a food processor with the plastic blade and blitz until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs

Break in the egg and mix into the breadcrumb mixture until it forms a smooth dough

(you can do all this by hand, but a food processor speeds things up a lot!)

Lightly grease a quiche dish and press the dough into a quiche dish and push it up to cover the sides

Put aside while you prepare the filling

Homity Pie Filling

Preheat the oven to 200 C

Prepare the potatoes and place in a pan of boiling water for 15 minutes

Once the potatoes are cooked, chop them all in half again

While the potatoes are cooking, heat the oil and butter in a large pan and fry the onions and garlic on a medium to low heat until soft and pale golden

Add the onions, parsley and 17 g of the cheese to the potato pan along with the spinach

Mix through

You might need a little bit of heat on to help to wilt the spinach

Grate in the nutmeg and scoop the potato veg mixture into the pastry case

Whisk together the cream and egg

Carefully pour the egg and cream mixture onto the vegetables

I used a fork to help make little pockets in the mix to encourage the cream down to the bottom

Finally sprinkle with the remaining cheese

Pop into the oven and cook for 40 minutes until the pastry is golden and the pie cooked through

Remove from the oven and leave to cool slightly for 10 minutes before serving (this helps to keep it together!)

For the 80s Salad

1/4 Iceberg Lettuce sliced long ways and then roughly chopped

2 carrots, rated

6 regular ol’ radish, sliced in different ways

4 spring onions, chopped

8 cherry tomatoes, halved

1 tray of cress chopped and sprinkled over the top

Pile it all into a bowl and mix before serving.

Seriously, if you like veggie pies, you are going to love Homity Pie!  Give it a go and let me know what you think. You can even go with a modern salad over my 80s version if you like. I was just using up some left over veggies and it turned out this way (well, I did buy the cress for the authentic experience)

Here’s to pie season!

This reminds me of Saturday’s with my gran. She loved homity pie. It’s one of my faves too as well as steak and ale. Thanks for sharing 🙂

I love food memories! I definitely think that Homity Pie is now one of my favourites too – now to make sure we don’t eat it weekly 😉 Glad you enjoyed the post 🙂
